Title in french : La Rotonde - Cours Mirabeau

Type : district

City : Aix en Provence

La Rotonde fountain and the Cours Mirabeau, highly symbolic of Aix-en-Provence, is a mecca of tourism but also an authentic place for many inhabitants attached to its traditional side.

Inaugurated in 1860, the fountain is at the location of a source discovered at the foot of the ramparts in the late 17th century. The three marble statues at the top symbolize justice (Cours Mirabeau), trade and agriculture (Avenue of the Belgians) and fine arts (Napoleon Bonaparte Avenue), which has long earned it the nickname fountain of the Three Graces.

By 1650, the former bastion south of the Old City became the Cours Mirabeau, a walk claimed by the bourgeoisie and the nobility to accompany the creation of the Mazarin district.

The course is practiced primarily in a carriage but if the nobles were on foot, they were very careful never to mix with the bourgeoisie and even less to the merchants. In 1748, to counter a store opening project, a decree was made for indicate that only cafes can settle there, and only on the north side.

The impact is still felt today as it is striking to observe a south side occupied by the banks and a north side occupied mostly by breweries.

The place remains today a busy promenade, by inhabitants of Aix-en-Provence for whom elegance and fashion are still strong values, or by tourists impressed by the architecture, the fountains and the trees. Two worlds that do not mix!

It is also still possible to admire some modern carriages, convertibles and roaring, which sometimes take pleasure in going back and forth in front of your impressed eyes.

The fountain marks the heart of town and the Cours Mirabeau is its showcase, alive, because people take pleasure to come here regularly to enjoy the passing time. But because the time is not the only one to pass, the game in terrace is often to never turn your back on the boardwalk...
