Type : technical

Mountains : Calanques

City : Marseille

Duration : 3h

Distance : 2km

Variation in height : 150m

Maximum altitude : 75m

For decades, Calanques lovers with basic skills in climbing do the tour of the Sormiou bec to enloy the atmosphere of end of the world, alternating aerial paths and ledges closer to the sea.

This tour is more akin to the hiking-climbing, some passages indeed requires a minimum of equipment: ropes, harnesses, slings... According to the chosen direction to go around, you will be in a climbing mode or in an abseiling mode.

Here we choose to focus on the abseil mode. From the beach of Sormiou, you must reach the col called Luï d'Aï by following the Black path, then take the path that plunges on your left. The feeling of emptiness begins to be significant. Shortly after, you can do a first abseil to make easier a passage of 15m in escalation that leads you to a handrail.

After this obstacle, you reach the cliffs of Tiragne and follow a ledge that leads you to the very tip of the cape. From there, you will find anchors to do an abseil (20m) and reach the eastern ledge of the headland. Follow this ledge located two meters above the sea (quiet time required) to reach the base of a large rock that you have to climb (level 4) on 10 meters.

From there, you will easily reach the upper entrance of the Cave of the Capelans. Or you skip the cave by climbing close to the sea with passages in level 5c, or you enter the cave to cross it. If so, you will need to install your abseil beyond the basin at the bottom of the cave. For this there are a crossing on the right side, with points close enough to install a handline.

After this obstacle, the most technical of the hike, you exit the cave and walk on the cliff until a final 10m abseil, then take a way on slab to go out and retrieve the path of return.

In the other direction, climbing mode, you will have to climb a first route in 3b and walk a bit to reach the cave. If you decide to go through the cave, the route to go out is in 5c level. Otherwise, a path in 4c next to the cave allows you to pass over. Last possibility, keep climbing close to the sea in a 5c max. To exit the eastern ledge, you will have to climb the ridge of the extreme cape in a 4b max, and exit at the ledge of the Tiragne, or reach the very top.

A nice ballad that demand caution and technical skills but where the only extreme thing is that name!
