Le Grand bar des Goudes, nestled in the heart of the iconic harbor surrounded by its creeks, is the kingdom of fresh fish, the art of sublimating the day's catch by some ancient recipes.

I must say that in this typical corner of Marseille, the tradition remain well anchored. The philosophy of the owner himself is in fact could not be more clear: "here we're not Marseillais, we are Goudois".

This rule of life is very present in this restaurant in which they are proud to offer products that are considered non-noble, and serve cod and wolf as the grandmother used to prepare them.

You'll also enjoy what was once part of the popular Marseille : this Fioupélan (sea crab) or what Chambri (slipper lobster) become so rare.

Of course, bouillabaisse (46 €, reservation required) is here a matter of principle. Rockfish (scorpion fish, St. Peter, weever, conger) will be carefully selected, presented raw, cut into your eyes and marinated in saffron. All fish served whole to accompany this famous soup that is eaten with croutons and rust.

Yet there is a good chance that the master of the house will make you discover his specialty: Bourride des Goudes (32 €). The recipe is actually not so different, except that instead of rock fish, you will have rather wild wolf or monkfish, less glamorous on paper. Except that the custom recipe, with his soup, its mussels, its favouilles (crabs), its creamy aioli and its potato with saffron will remain for sure a great tasting time.

Beyond these traditional recipes, trust and transparency are the watchwords of this establishment where the fish you find on your plate you will always be presented and weighed in stride. The price is then announced (based on 7 € for 100 gms), thus eliminating any unpleasant surprises.

Between us, the surprises, we are not against, as long as they are good. And this restaurateur, whose family lives in Goudes since 1830, some surprises, he has in spades. Moreover, the Monkfish liver, you know?
